About Sonia
Sonia G. Maher Sonia was born and grew up in Egypt. She came to the United States in 1963 to do graduate work in Hotel Administration and Tourism Marketing. After graduating from Cornell University with a B.Sc. and an M.A., she had a 25 year career in Hotel Management, Tourism Marketing and International Tourism Development.

In the latter years of her business career she was a consultant to the United Nations, World Bank, and World Tourism Organization advising foreign governments in the use of tourism as a means of economic development. At that time she cultivated her interest in art. She studied watercolor painting with a number of leading artists in the United States, and participated in a number of international watercolor workshops in France, Greece and Mexico.

In the past 25 years Sonia changed careers and became a professional watercolor artist. Her paintings have the spontaneity of impressionism. The subjects of her painting include flowers, figures and landscapes. Her paintings have been juried into a number of regional and national art shows, and have received a number of awards including "Best Watercolor". Her artwork has been exhibited in a number of galleries and venues in Annapolis, Frederick, Ellicott City, New Windsor, and Baltimore, Maryland.

Sonia is the founder of a regional art studio tour in central Maryland, and has hosted many visitors to her studio during the years she lived in Maryland. Over a thousand of her watercolors have been acquired by collectors living in 30 U.S. states, France, China, Holland, Switzerland, Germany, England, Scotland, Whales, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Canada and Egypt.

Sonia enjoys sharing her love for watercolors. She has taught painting classes for the last ten years at a number of Retirement Communities and at seasonal second home communities. Her students included beginners and accomplished artists. She has been invited by Cruise Ship companies to be a guest artist instructor. She has sailed in this capacity on Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruise Line and on The Yachts of Seabourn.

She travels the world with her sketch book capturing the many sites she visits. In between her travels she accepts watercolor commissions through her website.

Sonia and her husband Jim have made their home in Florida. Her studio is located along the Gulf Coast in Fort Myers, Florida.
